Cycling World Championships 2009

Fuji bicycles announced its newest sponsored athlete, 6-time Armed Forces Champion Timothy O’Donnell. Most recently Tim conquered all fellow competitors at the Ironman 70.3 St. Croix on May 3rd.
After the race 28 year-old O’Donnell described his gameplan for this reknowned tough course. “I had heard how tough the run can be here, and how it is so easy to blow up on that second lap. Rather than go for it on the bike, I just tried to stay in the mix, while hoping to have some extra strength on the run.” Cliff English, Tim’s coach, had recently placed him on a new running program which apparently did the trick as Tim came out of transition 2 (T2) in fifth place and somehow found the strength at the remaining third mile to pull ahead and claim victory.
Karen Bliss, Fuji’s Director of Marketing, said “he impressed me at the 2007 Eilat World Cup where he was the second American to finish behind our other Fuji-sponsored triathlete, Matt Reed. Now that I know more about him and his incredible accomplishments both on and off the bike, I’m convinced Tim’s the guy to watch in 2009 and beyond.”
Tim began scratching off accomplishments as early as high school where he was nominated captain of the varsity swim team and had set multiple school records, earning repeated district championships and All-State honors.
Funny enough, O’Donnell never foresaw becoming a triathlete as anything up his alley. Tim credits his older brother as the reason he is involved with triathlons in the first place. “The rest of our family thought it was pretty hilarious when I started doing triathlons. As a kid I had a very bad track record on the bike. In fact I ran into the garage, a parked car and two brick mailboxes growing up.”
In 2003, O’Donnell graduated from the Naval Academy with distinction. He earned a spot in the Immediate Graduate Education program while in school and soon headed to the University of California at Berkeley for a Masters in Ocean Engineering. O’Donnell managed to grab six Armed Forces Triathlon Championship titles as well as the Under-23 U.S. National Triathlon Championship. In regards to bragging rights within the armed forces, O’Donnell claimed first place at the 2007 Armed Forces Triathlon Championships.
In 2007, O’Donnell also earned spots on the U.S. National and World Championship Teams and in 2008 placed 6th at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. Though he missed the team, O’Donnell soon decided to devote his efforts full-time in triathlon.
Next up for this all-star triathlete is the Rev 3 Half Ironman on June 7th in Conneticut.
