Is it normal to have periods that are sometimes red and then other times brown and light? Mine alternate a bit

I have been off bc for over a yr. I have had irregular periods since (did b4 bc), approx 11. cycles vary 5 wks – 8 wks. I’ve been alternating between “normal” red periods that need tampons and pads, and then the next period (if thats what it is) is brown. This time, I’ve had brown sort of discharge with the odd bit of blood. Stains but not really need for pads or anything. Light with tiny clots sometimes. What’s going on? Do I just have light periods occassionally?? Am hoping to conceive next year, so would appreciate thoughts on this. Anyone had this problem and sorted it naturally?

The blood that is brown is just old blood and yes it is common to have this with a period. My periods always started with brown colored blood and ended with it and the red (new blood) being right in the middle.

Clotting is normal for some women as well. That is because of the uterus getting rid of the lining that wasn’t necessary that month because no pregnancy occurred. If one is having to change pads such as every hour then that is something to be concerned about and have evaluated by your dr. Same if the clots are consistently bigger than the size of a quarter.

Because of the irregular periods, if they are happening on a regular basis this needs to be evaluated by your dr to find out if a hormone imbalance could be going on to cause the problem.
