Cycling Interval Training

Interval training is a style of training for runners when you run at 90% of your MHR (maximum heart rate) for a period (not more than 3 minutes) then run at 60% of your MHR as a recovery jog then repeat the cycle. Interval training has the benefit of increasing the speed you can run in an aerobic state and therefore increasing your running speed.
It is the recovery jog in between each high-intensity segment that is important. This low-intensity jog allows your body to return to its equilibrium, flush out toxins and re-enter the aerobic zone, so that you can prepare for your next hard interval.
Just as in regular workouts, your performance during your high intensity intervals will suffer and begin to deteriorate without adequate recovery or rest time in between. In a sense, if you skimp on your recovery, you are overtraining during the course of your workouts and this will yield diminishing fitness returns. In fact, overtraining defeats the purpose of the workout: it will prevent you from increasing your base pace.
You can gauge the duration of your recovery intervals by time or distance, depending on your preference. In determining the length of your hard fast segments, you can also use time and distance, providing you cover your chosen distance in less than 3 minutes. You may choose to train on a track or treadmill which will display your distance and time on the computer console. Or if you don’t have access to either you can find your own marking system such as telegraph poles.
Many athletes prefer interval training on a track as they are flat, absorb much of the shock of impact and are a standard 400 meters. Fast intervals should be no shorted than 200 meters and no longer than 1200 meters.
